No doubt about it, Apple’s just-announced Find My iPhone app is pretty cool. If your precious goes missing, you can remotely transmit a “Help, help, I’m lost!” message in the hopes that whoever found it will return it.

All you do is install and configure the app–then hope that the thief is dumb enough to tap the “Trak” icon (which, admittedly, looks not unlike the
Safari icon). Doing so will bring up the URL of your choice (Google is the default) while secretly transmitting the phone’s location to GadgetTrak. Login to your account to see the report.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. On the low-tech side there’s StuffBak, a coded recovery label you slap on the back of your iPhone. The finder dials a toll-free number or visits the StuffBak site; the service arranges return shipping at no cost to the finder.

Both of the above apps. are a good start, but as you say, the first is expensive and the second does not consider the ‘thief’ factor. I would suggest iLocalis…it includes a daemon that runs in the background so any bad guy won’t even notice. even if the main icon is removed, it takes some command shell work to remove the daemon (insert laugh here). Very cheap (share ware) and it’s got all those neat features; remote disable, remote ring, even with another SIM card(!?) which is pretty cool…only drawback is that it is for a jailbroken phone…but to me that’s worth it. They were provided to me through my company. I placed a Trackitback on my Blackberry, laptop, kids cell phones, etc. Both times I lost my Blackberry, they had them returned to me, for free. Wonderful customser service, the best I’ve seen in years.

If they have the IMEI number, they ought to be able to locate it on their network, and tell me/the police where the phone is. MobileMe does have some value, however, you can essentially do everything MobileMe does with other programs which are free. Granted they are not in a neat little package but most people will go out of their way for free. Everytime I think about getting MobileMe, I think, Xbox Live is $50 bucks annually, Netflix is $120 a year, what does MobileMe really offer to spend that kind of cash? I did the free trial and I did like it but maybe $25 to $30 bucks like not $99 like. That’s a good tip on the Amazon deal but between MobileMe and 4gigs Ram gotta go with the ram on that one. Once the bad data is in the database, it’s probably best to fix it in the database, rather than pull it back out, fix it, and put it back in. It’s pretty much the same process as above: figure out where the bad data is, figure out what it ought to be (that’s the hard part!), then fix it. In this case, REPLACE is my best friend:

In this example, you can see the command-line client’s display is a little off due to the wacky character. Sometimes, though, it’s not so simple. I’ve stared at data in the command-line client and been unable to figure out what is wrong. In my example the two values look the same, so why aren’t they comparing equal? The answer is they’re not equal, but the terminal can’t display the funky characters.

Line ending problems commonly come from data that’s bulk-imported from a file, but with the wrong line terminators. For example, I might use the LOAD DATA INFILE statement on a CSV file that’s terminated with \r\n, but tell MySQL lines are terminated by \n as in a UNIX system. The result is the last column in the file always has an extra carriage return.

The first case actually isn’t too hard from the MySQL command-line client. The presence of trailing carriage returns will misalign the display:

The other type of bad character is a character that truly isn’t valid data. For example, Microsoft uses some proprietary extensions to standard ASCII character codes, especially in the Office suite — characters such as “smart quotes,” em-dashes, and so forth. This is discussed extensively elsewhere, so I won’t go into it too much. Some of the offenders are the curly quotes (characters 145-148) and the em-dash (character 151).

Supposing I’ve already loaded the bad data into the database, how can I detect it? For example, suppose a join between tables is failing because of a trailing carriage return, or a column looks like it has the same data as another column — while actually having different data — because my terminal refuses to display some of the characters.

From my php code I tried various ways to prevent this, by using addslashes (works only for..welll,slashes) and mysql_real_escape_string, without any luck. Those em-dash characters that comes with data user’s copy into the data capturing pages just keep giving problems.
Also php’s strreplace (replace dash with hyphen) just dont work, allthough I suspect that is dreamweaver replacing dash’es with hyphens in the actual source code.

Weird thing is that it works fine on my development machine (winxp,apache,mysql,php) but fails on our live server that runs the exact same setup on win2k3 Server.

Hey, thanks for the idea with replacement. We had a few thousand data lines that were grouping funny because of the damn \r we had in some of them. Code was fixed a long time ago to stop putting those there, but the crappy data was already around messing other things up. Your trick saved me lots of agony

Jokes aside, there are two types of bad characters: good characters in the wrong place, and characters that aren’t valid data. The most common case I’ve seen of the first type is line endings. UNIX, Windows and Mac systems all use different combinations of control characters as line endings. In UNIX, a newline terminates a line; in Mac it’s carriage-return, and in Windows it’s a carriage return followed by a newline. MySQL usually ignores trailing spaces when comparing character data (depending on the collation in use, among other things), but not if the trailing spaces are followed by a line ending. For example,
